RANI - HOPES FOR UNITY, SELF-ARTICULATION AND SUSTAINABILITY OF A GROUP

The film Hopes for Unity, Self-Articulation, and Sustainability of a Group (2018, 90min) is a documentary film that focuses on Rani who lives in a small Agta or Dumagat community along the Northeastern coast of the Philippines.

Rani speaks of ancestor spirits called anito existing in certain places, such as the Balete tree (Ficus spp.), rocky outcrops and reefs. The film focuses on images of survival and sustenance - the catching and preparing of different fish and shellfish from the region to trade for cash and dried foods, and the trapping preparations of wild animals such as the boar, deer and bitatawa lizards. Many sustenance practices are deemed illegal by local authorities.
